Shopping For Curtains? 3 Errors To Avoid

Curtains are one of the most versatile and attractive varieties of window treatments, which is why they are still used in force in new and old homes across the country. Unfortunately, making simple mistakes when it comes to shopping for window treatments could cause problems in the long run. Here are three errors to avoid when it comes to shopping for curtains.

1.    Ignoring Light Filtration  Every type of curtain is designed to offer a different level of light filtration, so think carefully about which room your curtains will be going in and how bright you want the room to be. For instance, curtains that have blackout capability are ideal for bedrooms, since you may not want light pouring into the space on days you prefer to sleep in. On the other hand, light, gauzy curtains are great in bathrooms, kitchens, and dining rooms, since you might prefer those spaces to be brighter.

For rooms that occasionally need to be completely dark, consider total blackout curtains, which are lined with special light-blocking fabric. These curtains are great in rooms where you may enjoy movies, such as home theaters or living rooms with televisions.

2.    Choosing the Wrong Patterns While some patterns are classic and can meld with all kinds of decorating styles, others are trendy or highly seasonal, which could impact the way your space looks in the long run. Before you choose a pattern, think about how it would look a few months or years down the road, and opt for whatever would mesh better with your overall decorating style.

Steer clear of any fabrics or curtains that contain bright or bold patterns unless you want your curtains to be the main focal point of the room. On the other hand, if you want your windows to stand out, try to select curtains with pattern, texture, or shimmer to help them to stand out.

3.    Forgetting to Measure Curtains should be long enough to lightly brush the floor, but not long enough to pool onto the floor. Also, curtains should be wide enough to cover the entire opening of your window when they are closed.

Measure the height of your walls and the width of your windows carefully before you start shopping for window treatments, and don't settle for anything that won't fit properly.     After you have found the perfect curtains, take your time to hang them. Focus on mounting curtain brackets directly to studs in the walls, and measure the distances carefully before placing brackets in their final destinations. By taking the time to select and hang window treatments carefully, you can enjoy a beautiful focal point in your home without interrupting sunlight or impacting your normal daily life.
